Morning

The free gift following many trespasses brought justification.

“Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.”—“I, I am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins. Put me in remembrance; let us argue together; set forth your case, that you may be proved right.”—I have blotted out your transgressions like a cloud and your sins like mist; return to me, for I have redeemed you.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”—But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many.—And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Evening

“Engage in business until I come.”

“It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake.”—“To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away.”

“We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work.”—“Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?”—Leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps.

Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.—Each one’s work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it.—Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

Morning

The king . . . held out to Esther the golden scepter. . . . Then Esther approached and touched the tip of the scepter.

“If he cries to me, I will hear, for I am compassionate.”

So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world. There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. We love because he first loved us.—Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.— For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father.—We have boldness and access with confidence through our faith in him.—Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Evening

They said to one another, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was.

Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness: He was manifested in the flesh.—“For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”—“Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. . . . If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh. . . . For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.”—The people of Israel . . . gathered, some more, some less. But when they measured it with an omer, whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no lack. Each of them gathered as much as he could eat. . . . Morning by morning they gathered it, each as much as he could eat.—“Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ . . . Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

Daily Light for August 29

Morning

Blessed is he who trusts in the LORD.

No distrust made [Abraham] waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised.—The men of Judah prevailed, because they relied on the LORD, the God of their fathers.

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea.—It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in man. It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in princes.—The steps of a man are established by the LORD, when he delights in his way; though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the LORD upholds his hand.

Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him! Oh, fear the LORD, you his saints, for those who fear him have no lack!

Prov. 16:20; Rom. 4:20, 21; 2 Chron. 13:18; Ps. 46:1, 2; Ps. 118:8, 9; Ps. 37:23, 24; Ps. 34:8, 9 (Read full verses…)

Evening

In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.

You will not fear the terror of the night. He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge.—“As a hen gathers her brood under her wings.”—He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is your shade on your right hand.

Let me dwell in your tent forever! Let me take refuge under the shelter of your wings!—Even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you.

He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?—You are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s.—“I will trust, and will not be afraid.”

Ps. 4:8; Ps. 91:5, 4; Matt. 23:37; Ps. 121:3-5; Ps. 61:4; Ps. 139:12; Rom. 8:32; 1 Cor. 3:23; Isa. 12:2 (Read full verses…)

Morning

“The accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God.”

They have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony.—Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.

He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame.—That through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.—In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.—Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. . . . And take . . . the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.—Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Rev. 12:10; Rev. 12:11; Rom. 8:33, 34; Col. 2:15; Heb. 2:14, 15; Rom. 8:37; Eph. 6:11, 17; 1 Cor. 15:57 (Read full verses…)

Evening

The tree of life.

God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.—“He gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”—“As the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will. . . . For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself.”

“To the one who conquers I will grant to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.”—Through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

Blessed is the one who finds wisdom. . . . Long life is in her right hand. . . . She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her; those who hold her fast are called blessed.—Christ Jesus, whom God made our wisdom.

Gen. 2:9; 1 John 5:11; John 3:16; John 5:21, 26; Rev. 2:7; Rev. 22:2; Prov. 3:13, 16, 18; 1 Cor. 1:30 (Read full verses…)

Daily Light for August 27

Friday, August 27th, 2010

Morning

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

By the word of your lips I have avoided the ways of the violent. My steps have held fast to your paths; my feet have not slipped.—When you walk, they will lead you; when you lie down, they will watch over you; and when you awake, they will talk with you. For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light.—Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”—We have something more sure, the prophetic word, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place.—Now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.—They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.

Ps. 119:105; Ps. 17:4, 5; Prov. 6:22, 23; Isa. 30:21; John 8:12; 2 Pet. 1:19; 1 Cor. 13:12; Rev. 22:5 (Read full verses…)

Evening

“What do you mean, you sleeper? Arise.”

This is no place to rest, because of uncleanness that destroys.—Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.—If riches increase, set not your heart on them.—“Now set your mind and heart to seek the LORD your God. Arise.”

“Why are you sleeping? Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation.”—“But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap.”—“As the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept.”—“Yet a little while, and the coming one will come and will not delay.”—The hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed.—“Therefore stay awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the cock crows, or in the morning—lest he come suddenly and find you asleep.”

Jonah 1:6; Mic. 2:10; Col. 3:2; Ps. 62:10; 1 Chron. 22:19; Luke 22:46; Luke 21:34; Matt. 25:5; Heb. 10:37; Rom. 13:11; Mark 13:35, 36 (Read full verses…)
